Job Shadow Reflective Narrative
I've always told myself I wanted to do something with helping people. On the 18th of March I went on a ride along with a police officer from the Lindsay Police Department. I chose to do Lindsay not because it was convenient but only because if I were to ever become an officer of the law I would want to involved with the community I grew up in.The officer I rode with was officer Ramirez.
When I first arrived the officer gave me a packet to read. The packet he gave me was about forensics. It was also about the steps you go through when first arriving at a crime scene. After learning about the basics the officer had me enter a room located across the way. In the room was a fake scenario in which a man is found dead in the office. It was my job to try and find out how the man died using the clues in the room. I was able to take pictures of the bullet shells, left over firearms, bullet holes, and any other piece of evidence. I also attempted to try and get some skin cells off a knocked over chair using a large piece of transparent tape. When it was all over it was clear that this man was murdered by an office member with one of the firearms.
After learning about forensics and figuring out the crime scene the officer took me for a ride along. We drove around town for a while, before the first call. The first call was about some graffiti on a fence. When we arrived at the fence the officer took photos of the graffiti and sent the pictures back to the station for processing. Immediately after sending the pictures he received another call about a runaway from JJ Carens. The girl was reportedly last seen getting into a brown car and could be possibly headed to the cost area. When we received this call he explained to me what it was. After the explanation we proceeded to the parents house. After arriving to the parents house he proceeded inside to talk to the mom as i waited in the car. When he came back he explained how the girl who ran away was most likely with her boyfriend. After that we just drove around and talked about this profession. When we got back to the station he shook my hand and said, “It was a pleasure son” then walked away and I proceeded to my car.
After this experience I am even more interested in this career. I think the only draw back from this career is that it has to do with shift work. I've heard that if you don't have a family that shift work isn't that bad, but when you do it's hard to make it to family events. Other then that i really hope to pursue in this career in the near future.
